Story Update : Saturday, February 11, 2012    11:41 AM

The controversy on the age row issue of Army Chief Gen V K Singh should be understood ended. As the Supreme Court which said the government decision on his date of birth will apply for his service matters, forcing him to withdraw his petition.

The good thing is this that neither the govt. nor Singh want to give it air. This is really a shameful condition that the Govt and the army chief had to do face to face in the court.

The apex court told Gen Singh that he cannot resile on his commitment that he would abide by the government decision to treat his date of birth as May 10, 1950 and rejected the contention of “prejudice” and “perversity”.

The court said that government decision on his age issue will continue to be there and refused to interfere with his service record which maintains his date of birth as May 10, 1950. According to this, he will retire on May 31 this year.

On its part, Government withdrew its December 30, 2011 order rejecting his statutory complaint, and told the bench it has “full faith and confidence” in the Army Chief.

The two different date of births are indicated in different records that are May 10,1950 in the army record and in the military secretary record this has been mentioned as May 10,1951.The question rises that why this issue had not been solved for last 40 years? If this was a mere technical fault this would have been solved.Neither Singh was showing the clear intention regarding this nor the govt. When this issue reached to the Supreme Court then the govt took action on this issue.

During the three-hour long proceedings, the apex court applauded his 38 years of service to the nation, saying that it was “proud” of having “meritorious” officer like Gen Singh and wanted to ensure that he continues to work and lead as the Chief of 13-lakh strong army.

Although, the Supreme Court ending this controversy and regarding the prestige of Gen. Singh has given a chance to singh to withdraw his petition.
