First unit of power plant at Jhajjar synchronised

Chandigarh:The first 660-MW unit of the Mahatma Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project at Jhajjar was successfully synchronised with the grid today.

Announcing the development today, Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) Managing Director Anurag Agarwal said this is the first 660-MW unit based on the latest state-of-the-art super-critical technology to be commissioned in Haryana.

Super-critical technology is advantageous because of higher efficiency, lower fuel consumption, less emissions and quick response to grid requirements, he said.

The foundation stone of the project, which was developed by CLP Power India, was laid on January 10, 2009, and the first unit has been synchronised exactly 36 months later.

He said this unit would provide about 158 lakh additional units of electricity daily to the state.

The second 660-MW unit of this 2x660-MW project is also at an advanced stage of construction and is likely to be synchronised in July, 2012, he informed.

HPGCL was nominated as the nodal agency for setting up this project. A special purpose vehicle, 'Jhajjar Power Limited (JPL)', was incorporated by HPGCL for implementing the project.

Agarwal further added that with commissioning of this unit, the total installed generation capacity within the state of Haryana has now gone up to 4,390.5 MW from 3,730.5 MW.

Regarding availability of power, Agarwal added that HPGCL has been contributing more than 40 per cent of the total power supplied to the state.
